A few answers. A direct way to reach us.
How do I start or stop a walk?
Use Slide to start on the main map. Pause stops the active recording interval; automatic pause can continue sensing to notice when you move again. Finish saves the completed walk and opens its summary. Walking detection alone does not start a recording.
Will tracking work with my screen locked?
An explicitly started walk can continue using location in the background with iOS location permission. Keep the app available to iOS; force-quitting it can interrupt recording. Background recording depends on iOS permissions and device conditions. If tracking stops, check Onward’s location status and iPhone Settings.
How do I allow location or steps again?
Open the top-right menu → Settings, then Location access or Motion & Fitness. If iOS has not asked before, Onward can show the permission prompt. If access is denied or already configured, the control opens iPhone Settings. Onward refreshes the status when you return.
Why are walked distance and explored distance different?
Walked distance counts your recorded movement, including repeats and walks outside supported cities. City explored counts matched eligible street or path portions inside that city, once. Completion uses the same versioned eligible network. Inaccurate or ambiguous GPS can leave a section unmatched; the visible saved route remains intact.
Where can I find a saved walk?
Open the top-right menu → Walks. Choose Day, Week, Month or Year and use the period-summary arrows to browse earlier periods. Tap a walk to open its route and summary. The route-framing button brings the whole saved route back into view.
What if my walks are not syncing?
Check that you are signed into the intended Google account and have internet access. Open Settings → Sync now. Onward saves walks locally when offline and retries eligible changes when connected. If Settings offers a saved-file or conflict recovery action, review it before choosing. Do not delete the app to fix a sync problem: unsynced local walks could be lost.
How do I delete a walk or my account?
To delete one walk, open Walks, select it and use Delete walk below its summary. To remove your account, use Settings → Delete account and complete the Google confirmation. Once the server accepts your request, Onward removes identified local account files and signs you out; cloud removal can take a little longer. If the request cannot be confirmed, your local walks are kept and you can retry. Earlier revisions can remain after an individual walk deletion; the privacy policy explains account deletion and backup limits.
I cannot sign in or open the app. Can I still request help?
Yes. Contact support below. For account or data requests, write from the email address associated with your Onward account so ownership can be checked. Support does not need your password or a sign-in verification code.
Where are Mapbox’s privacy choices?
On a map, tap the information button to open the native Mapbox information and telemetry options. Those choices control Mapbox telemetry; deleting an Onward walk or changing its heatmap is a separate action.
